Education at the Civic Center
The Applause! series of the Civic Center of Greater Des Moines exists to serve students and educators of all ages with opportunities to participate in, understand, and appreciate the performing arts.
The Civic Center is thrilled to bring the world of the performing arts to students of central Iowa. For many students, a trip to the Civic Center is often their first exposure to attending live professional theater. Since its inception in 1996, Applause! Live Performances for Young Audiences has served students and teachers from central Iowa.
The performing arts are both a powerful tool to enhance educational goals and an essential component of a complete education. Through the years, studies have proven that the inclusion of the performing arts in a broad-based curriculum improves the quality of a child's educational experience. The arts teach discipline, improve self-esteem, inspire creativity, build critical thinking skills, and help young people to set and reach goals. Knowledge of the arts makes participating schools vibrant places for students where they are encouraged to discover, to create, and to reach their full potential.
An empty seat in the house today costs us audience members for the arts tomorrow. There is an intense need for investment in the arts, and in the next generation of audiences for theater, music, and dance. The Civic Center is committed to this investment in future audiences through Applause! Live Performances for Young Audiences.
