EDUCATION AND COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT
EDUCATION AND COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT programs at the Civic Center of Greater Des Moines are core to its mission as a non-profit performing arts center. These programs increase the Civic Center's impact and sustainability by:
- Presenting high-quality works for young audiences
- Producing community engagement programs for all ages
- Providing professional development for teachers and teaching artists
- Building partnerships with educational institutions, arts and cultural organizations, and other community members
- Advocating for the arts and arts education
The Civic Center’s flagship Education program, the APPLAUSE! SERIES, started in 1996. This program presents professional touring productions to school audiences and continues to engage students and educators from across the region. During the 2009-2010 year more than 30,000 students and educators attended APPLAUSE! SERIES performances!
Beyond the school performances, Education and Community Engagement initiatives intersect with all areas of Civic Center’s programming—from Broadway to music to dance. Connecting with the art on stage, these programs deepen the performance experience and provide engaging learning opportunities through the arts for all ages.
